JAYAPURA – Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) has called for accelerated infrastructure development and improved connectivity across Papua.

AHY arrived at Sentani Airport in Jayapura Regency on Thursday (Sept. 17, 2026), accompanied by Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri. His visit was part of a coordination meeting with regional leaders to discuss infrastructure development and connectivity across the six provinces and 42 regencies and municipalities in the Papua region.

During the meeting, the central and regional governments discussed various basic infrastructure and connectivity needs as part of efforts to expand public access and promote economic growth in Papua.

AHY said the central government would continue to follow up on the aspirations of regional leaders, particularly those related to basic infrastructure development and interregional connectivity.

“We want to connect different regions, regencies and cities, and ultimately advance the local economy and develop the potential that already exists,” AHY said.

According to AHY, improved connectivity would have a direct impact on local economic activity while creating greater employment opportunities.

One of the government’s priorities is strengthening land connectivity, including the construction and improvement of roads connecting Jayapura with other areas.

However, connectivity development in Papua is not limited to land transportation. The government is also seeking to strengthen maritime connectivity through the development of ports and the broader maritime sector.

Stronger sea connectivity is considered important for ensuring the smooth distribution of goods while reducing logistics costs across Papua.

Air transportation is also a government priority, particularly pioneer flights that play an important role in supporting public mobility and the distribution of goods to areas that are difficult to reach by land.

“Papua must not be left behind compared with our fellow citizens and other communities across Indonesia,” AHY said.

He added that infrastructure development and stronger connectivity are not merely about physical construction, but are also part of broader efforts to improve people’s welfare.

The participation of Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri in the agenda underscored efforts to strengthen coordination between the central and regional governments in accelerating development across Papua. ***
